Not Quite a Minivan: Koenigsegg to Offer a Family Car

Shopping for a hypercar when you have a family can be difficult. Do you drive your family members one at a time? Or, more likely, you and your wife/mistress go by a car while those asshole kids take an Uber. Either way, you’re not getting the whole family anywhere in a fast-as-hell two-seater.

Or are you?

Ignoring all the other three-plus seating exotic sports cars available, Koenigsegg is contributing to the cause with their first-ever four-seat car. The 1677 hp(!!!!) Gemera may only have two-doors, but those doors are massive enough that when they open like this (*insert Russ Hanneman gif here*), the front-seats don’t even have to tilt forward to let riders in the back.

Honestly, if you’re a family of four and in the market for a new car, it would actually be pretty stupid not to consider the Gemera. It has a small, fuel-efficient engine, but for real. Instead of the typical V8, this is a 2.0-liter, three-cylinder, nicknamed the Tiny Friendly Giant (maybe that’s clever in Swedish.)

The Koenigsegg Gemera Has a Three-Cylinder Engine (But for Real)

It uses the company’s camshaft-less Freevalve system and cylinder deactivation for improved fuel-efficiency, which is a strong argument for considering it for your family. Honestly, it’s a three-banger that can operate as a two-, maybe even one-cylinder? How economical, right?

Also, it produces 592 hp and 443 lb-ft of torque worth of power, cause, you know, Koenigsegg. Oh, and there are three electric motors that offer an additional 1085 hp, generating a combined 2581 lb-ft. You want that kind of power when you have a car full of passengers.

And it’s safe! While Koenigsegg has always built rear-drive cars, they know that won’t work for your daily-driver. Not with kids in the back. They’re precious cargo. That’s why the Gemera has all-wheel-drive. Cause it’s safer. Also, it helps the vehicle hit 62 mph from a standstill in 1.9 seconds. Which is great, because you’re always running late when you have to wait for your wife and kids. It’s important to get everyone where they’re going on time.

It’s easy to just assume that you’re buying a Hyundai/Kia when you need a new family car, but it’s important to explore all of your options. Mazda’s been building some great vehicles and the Golf SportWagen is still available (barely). But, also, Koenigsegg. It’s worth a look.
