BRZ and 86 to Finally Offer More Power

First released in 2012, the unlikely Subaru-Toyota pairing that resulted in the BRZ/86 is finally getting official word on a refresh. At the time, they were a welcomed addition to the sports coupe segment, offering an entry-level option that remains sadly limited (there’s the MX-5 for those secure enough in themselves, and the Mustang/Camaro/Challenger for those who aren’t.)

Originally available as the Subaru BRZ and the Scion FR-S (remember Scion? Not really, eh) the latter was rebadged as the 86 when Toyota dissolved their “youth” brand in 2016. Both (or all three, however semantics dictate) housed the same Subie flat-four in a dedicated rear-drive drivetrain. They come equipped with both stick (yay) or auto (nay.)

While the 53-47 weight-split and skinny Prius tires offered fun rare for this price-point, the engine’s 205 hp and 156 lb-ft of torque left much to be desired. Demand for a more powerful version was immediate, but the two manufacturers didn’t seem interested in satisfying that interest.

Further complicating things was the agreement between Toyota and BMW to develop a new Supra/Z4 together. While this offering would occupy a higher category, it seemed unlikely that boring ol’ Toyota would feature two rear-drive sports cars in their line-up.

The BRZ and 86 Benefitted from Prius Tires. More Power is Preferrable.

Yet.

Word’s come out from both companies that a second-generation will be forthcoming. Supporting this is Toyota just increasing its ownership of Subaru, up now to 20%. Subaru’s followed suit, buying more stocks in Toyota.

Toyota 860While specs haven’t been released, rumor has it that the new BRZ and 86 will get the larger 2.4L boxer engine currently powering the Subaru Ascent, Legacy, and Outback. Worth a more exciting 260 hp and 277 lb-ft, this would certainly draw interest from a larger audience. Especially if both companies keep the weight down. Trick tires may still add to the fun.

The current-gen will stick around through the 2020 model year but expect to see a preview of the newer version soon. Details should be trickling out at any time, too.
