The constantly evolving world of automotive technology has led to many brands having to confront their identity. Engineering has allowed even the staidest of grocery-getters to perform in a way that only decades ago was truly impressive. When an entry-level subcompact can put up numbers comparable to muscle cars of yesterday, a different approach need-be considered.
Ferrari is an example of a company that went all-in on tech-focused driving. By taking an approach that excludes driver participation to a striking degree, they’ve been able to ensure that anyone behind the wheel of a Ferrari can drive like Aryton Senna.
Lamborghini, the wild-child alternative to Enzo’s more oppressive company, hasn’t been immune to this pull toward driver-exclusion. There’s been a steady shift to all-wheel-drive and automatic transmissions, cutting out user participation for software mapping. As a result, there’s been an undeniable increase in performance. But it’s been at the cost of involvement.
Such is the dictate of the market. To remain relevant, you must change. Even if it costs you your soul. Hell, there’s even an SUV with a snorting bull logo on it. Remaining sacred hasn’t been a concern for a while now.
A Lamborghini EV Makes Sense. Less So a More Mature Design
Take the news of the first Lamborghini EV, for instance. It’s not that there’s anything inherently wrong with an all-electric Lambo. In fact, the raw, face-melting acceleration an electric engine offers seems well-suited to the Sant’Agata Bolognese-based company.
It’s the statement from the head of R&D, Maurizio Reggiani gave AutoCar regarding “a mature design.” Built on the Porsche Taycan’s battery-operated platform, it would be a four-door grand tourer. A mature, four-door EV from Lamborghini.
Why the hell would they want to make a mature looking car? They specialize in ridiculous looking cars! It should be a preposterously angular beast. Like if Shredder from the Ninja Turtles and a rollerblade went into that transport unit from the Fly. You should be constantly worried that you’re going to cut yourself on it.
