The EPA is claiming that the Jeep Grand Cherokees and the Ram 1500s equipped with the 3L turbodiesel are using software to pass emission tests. Similar to what Volkswagen was caught doing, the software limits the amount of tailpipe emissions while being tested.
Fiat Chrysler Automobile’s CEO Sergio Marchionne acknowledges that the vehicles do have a device the cause the engines to act differently under certain conditions, but that these conditions are for, like, super legitimate reasons and whatever.
Marchionne further claims the FCA has been aware of the issue (the issue being a device they installed, so, go figure) and have been working with the EPA since 2015 to rectify the situation. The EPA must have totally remembered that this was being addressed when they went public with the claim.
Also in 2015 Volkswagen admitted to installing a “defeat device” that allowed the vehicles to pass emissions test by changing the performance of the engine under certain conditions. The scandal was responsible for the deaths of 89 people and resulted in a $1.2 billion fine…Sorry, resulted in the deaths of 127 people and cost $900 million in penalties…Nope, sorry again. The scandal resulted in the death of the diesel engine in North America and $4.3 billion in settlement.
