Next-Gen Subaru BRZ On Its Way

In about a week’s time, Subaru will unveil the next-generation Subaru BRZ. An evolution of the current model, it will be the first redesign since the Subie/Toyota/Scion project hit the market. Details are scant, as they’ll be saved for the official announcement, but there are a few rumours to set expectations.

The most important change takes place under the hood. The current BRZ was launched with a 2litre boxer engine powering the rear wheels (making it the only non-AWD in the Subaru lineup.) Despite its sporting aspirations, the flat-four powerplant only produced 197hp and 151lb-ft of torque. Toyota did boost the same engine in its 86 to 205hp and 156lb-ft starting with the 2016 model year.

Still, thanks to the coupe being fitted with skinny Prius tires, the BRZ has built a reputation as a fun daily driver. Its combination of reliability and willingness to go sideways has made it an attractive option for those looking to spruce up their daily commute.

But what’s really needed to make it more than just a novelty is the ability to go head-to-head with other sports cars. When a Miata can challenge you with almost a quarter of the power, you need help. To that end, Subaru (and, presumably, Toyota) are upping their game. New for 2021 will be the inclusion of Subaru’s 2.4lire engine. Currently powering the Ascent and Outback. In its naturally aspirated form, it already offers a power bump. Output is just shy of 220hp, which gives about 10% more go.  With a turbo strapped to it, however, those numbers jump up to 260hp and 277lb-ft.

The challenge will be: how closely are Toyota and Subaru working together. While any enthusiast would be happy with more power, it creates a dilemma for Toyota. Those numbers put it in the same ballpark as the base Supra. For them, having a lower model would make more sense.

We’ll find out next week.
